The Alaska Civics Academy is a comprehensive program aimed at educating individuals about civics, regardless of their knowledge level. With three different levels of instruction, our goal is to meet everyone where they are on their learning journey. The curriculum is designed to be flexible, allowing us to address various topics, explore local government processes in depth, and even bring together diverse coalitions of like-minded individuals from across the state to tackle their issues.
The primary purpose of the academy is to promote civic engagement, foster a sense of community, and increase voter turnout. We have a team of professional facilitators and subject matter experts who develop and deliver the curriculum.
The first level, Civics 101, is designed for those with limited knowledge of government. It provides an overview of each level of government, from local to federal, as well as an understanding of each branch. This entry-level course serves as a foundation for further exploration.
The second level delves into advocacy within these spaces. It explores the history of social justice, the importance of advocacy, and focuses on a specific topic. This level is ideal for individuals who possess some knowledge of civics, have specific issues they want to address, and are seeking effective solutions.
The third level of instruction focuses on coalition building. It involves an in-depth examination of a specific issue, bringing together individuals who are actively engaged in advocacy work. The purpose is to analyze the issue, explore potential solutions, and develop strategic plans to effect positive change. This level aims to foster collaboration among subject matter experts, organizers, and concerned citizens from across the state to tackle significant challenges.
Participants of the academy are encouraged to become part of our vibrant civics academy community. Through this community, we strive to cultivate advocates, organizers, and trainers.
Join us in celebrating the one and only Bippy's 55th birthday with a FUNraiser to support Alaskans Take A Stand and the Alaska Civics Academy. We're throwing a party filled with music, games, prizes, and free food at our new home, Umoja Co-working space. Our goal is to raise $6000 for a year's rent and with your help, we know we can do it!
Don't miss out on the chance to make a difference and have a blast while doing it. Let's come together as a community to show our love and appreciation for Bippy while supporting a great cause.
